Highway Cleanup – July 15 2017
Yesterday morning 4 of us Scotts Valley Kiwanians, Marshall, Myself, Mike III, and ring leader Linda along with special guest star Sherry Simoni received good Karma by cleaning up our usual stretch of Highway 17. I have attached photos and two more will follow on a second email. Together we picked up I think the longest stretch of Highway 17 that I can recall, the total take being 11 bags of refuse. Observations: The Highway was cleaner than in many seasons in the past, less litter overall. This time out some of us came home with treasure. Mike III found a screw driver that is as long as a Roman short sword, Marshall some cargo tie downs which are in excellent shape, Linda a pair of sweet Tortoise shell Jackie O type sunglasses, which I unsuccessfully tried to trade an unopened can of Modello for. She gave me the glasses anyway. I plan to give them to my wife, as a kind of early combined Birthday, Anniversary and Christmas present. Don’t let her know that!
Less fast food rubbish was collected by me. Empty bottles of upscale mineral waters were picked up. Almost no hard liquor bottles collected, The beer remains were largely inexpensive canned domestic, again unlike the bottled imports of yesteryear with the sole exception of that stash of a bunch of Modellos. It looks like someone had a Highway side Modello party! The tobacco trend continues: A huge decrease in cigarette waste, and NO chaw (Copenhagen) Conclusions: While the Stock Market is testing new highs, the economic recovery continues, with the return of valuable items discarded. Today’s more socially conscious Litterbugs are showing a tendency for a healthier lifestyle, while their economic wellbeing improves apace . Thanks for reading, with love to you all! John.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Christmas Lunch 12-6-2014
This annual lunch is hosted by the Shadowbrook Restaurant in Capitola. The Kiwanis club purchased gifts for all the “littles” and with the help of the Key clubs and Circle K members all 80 gifts were quickly wrapped. On Saturday Santa Claus with his elves came to give them out. Everybody had a great time.
Music At Skypark Sponsor Awards Dinner 11-12-2014
The annual dinner to give sponsor appreciation plaques and to give the Scotts Valley School District a check for $20,000 which will go directly to music programs within the district. Beth Hollenbeck the district music director will distribute the funds as needed so as to improve the music programs.

Student Scholarship Awards 7-9-2014
On July 9th at our evening Kiwanis meeting the club awarded two scholarship students, Elisa Bargetto the Mike Smith Scholarship and Erinna Woo the Grabil Schilarship. The meeting had their families attending as well.
Charlie Wise Appreciation Day 4-29-2014
On April 29th we awarded member Charlie Wise for all the work he has done with sponsored youth through the years. He is the Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley representative for 3 Key clubs, San Lorenzo Valley, Pacific Collegiate School, Scotts Valley High School, and the Boulder Creek Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. He has unselfishly devoted his time for all these sponsored youth groups for over 15 years.

Approximately 40 people descended upon the undeveloped lot between the Scotts Valley Senior Center and the Scotts Valley Community Center on Kings Village Road last Saturday to participate in the first day of work on what will become a community garden honoring the memory of Valley Churches United Missions’ late founder, Annette Marcum.
Funded by $10,000 awarded by the City of Scotts Valley to cover material costs, the project will convert an undeveloped piece of unused land into a 6,000-square-foot garden area for community members to plant flowers, and produce.
Volunteers from local service organizations — including the Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley, the UCSC chapter of Circle K, the Key Clubs from San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley high schools, Surf City Kiwanis, Scotts Valley Host Lions Club, Valley Churches United Missions, Boy Scout Troop 623, and Cub Scout Pack 623 — lent their time and efforts.
According to Scotts Valley Vice Mayor Dene Bustichi, who was directing the work, the volunteers dug trenches, laid the irrigation systems, installed fences, and removed a section of curb where the wheelchair ramp will be installed.
“We had between 30 and 40 people here working on this,” he said. “All kinds of people were calling in about it.”
Once completed, Bustichi said that the garden will be operated by the city’s parks and recreation department and will provide several dozen planting areas that residents can use for planting — something he said he believes will be popular for the residents of the surrounding apartments and townhouses.
“This gives folks — kids, seniors, anyone — the ability to come and garden,” Bustichi said.
The garden will be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations, he said, and will boast paved pathways, as well as several raised garden plots and water spigots that will be accessible to those who have difficulties reaching the ground.
Bustichi said that the city had been planning for the community garden for several months prior to Marcum’s passing in January, but that naming the garden in her honor felt very appropriate.
Bustichi said that there was still much work to be done, and that there would be several additional volunteer days.
“We’ll be working for the next several Saturdays,” he said, adding that he hoped that the project would be ready to open by early May.
