KIWANIS ANNOUNCES THE MIKE SMITH KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley announces the establishment of an annual endowed scholarship starting at $2,500. It will be named in honor of long time Kiwanis member and supporter of education, Mike Smith.

Mr. Smith campaigned for development of Scotts Valley High School and was a founding member of the Scotts Valley Unified School Board, which he served for ten years. He was instrumental in helping Kiwanis raise over $91,000 in contributions to Scotts Valley Schools during the tight budget years of the early 2000’s and is well known for his exceptional volunteer service. He led Kiwanis in its Tent Rental Program for local charities. Kiwanis provides tents to non-profit community organizations for their events, at less than market rates.

The Mike Smith Kiwanis Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who lives in or goes to school in northern Santa Cruz County. It will be awarded by the Kiwanis Club based on its judgment of an application letter that describes the student’s past accomplishments and future goals. Detailed application requirements will be provided to schools in the area.

Initially, the scholarship will be funded by regular Kiwanis revenue, but an account will be established which will be augmented annually by an amount equal to the scholarship. Eventually interest will be sufficient to perpetuate the scholarship indefinitely. Individual donations are encouraged. They will be added to the revenue base to advance the endowment.

KIWANIS ANNOUNCES THE JOSEPH A. GRABILL SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Scotts Valley announces the establishment of a $1000 scholarship to benefit college bound Key Club seniors of San Lorenzo Valley High School, Scotts Valley High School or Pacific Collegiate High School. It is named in honor of Joseph A, Grabill, a dedicated and respected Life Member of Kiwanis.

Mr. Grabill, nicknamed “UNK” by Key Club members, founded the SLV Key Club fifty years ago. He was the Key Club Advisor for fourteen years and was recognized nationally as a “Superior Key Club Advisor”. He started a Kiwanis scholarship fund for SLV, contributing to it steadily with personal contributions during his forty years as a Kiwanis member.

The scholarship, which evolved from his original fund, may be awarded annually to a graduating Key Club member who demonstrates exemplary academic and civic values. It is based on an application that describes the members past accomplishments and future goals.

The scholarship will initially be funded by regular Kiwanis revenue, but will ultimately be endowed as part of a scholarship fund that also covers the Mike Smith Kiwanis Scholarship, established earlier this year.
